The caliber is marked on the right side of the test gun's barrel, reading '38 S&W Special Ctg.' While 'Smith & Wesson' is stamped on the left side. The serial number is stamped on the bottom of the grip frame. Our test gun's serial number indicates that it was probably made in 1977, before the 10-7 engineering change took place (later in 1977).

Smith Wesson 38 Special Ctg Serial Number Lookup Texas

I acquired an old S&W revolver to build a bullseye pistol. But it appears that it is older than I first thought. It is a 4' barrel, round butt, four screw sideplate. It has the 'old style' hammer and trigger. It has no markings except the S&W logo on the sideplate, and the serial number 16500 stamped on the butt. I think is is a 'Victory' model, but I am not sure. Does anyone know how I could go about dating it by the serial number? I would really like to find out if parts are still available before I start working on it.
